Grahan 2027: every solar and lunar eclipse, and which ones India can see
2027 has five eclipses, but only two touch India: a faint penumbral Chandra Grahan before dawn on 21 February, and a partial Surya Grahan on the afternoon of 2 August. Here are the dates, the times for twelve Indian cities and the Sutak timings.
The short answer
- Surya Grahan 2027: annular on 6 February (not visible in India) and total on 2 August, seen across India as a partial eclipse from about 3:45 to 5:45 PM IST.
- Best view in India on 2 August: the south and west. Bengaluru 38.9% of the Sun covered, Mumbai 31.9%, Delhi 8.1%.
- Chandra Grahan 2027: three penumbral lunar eclipses only. The one of 21 February (2:42 AM–6:44 AM IST) is above India’s horizon but hard to notice; 18 July barely touches; 17 August is not visible from India.
- Sutak: only for the 2 August solar eclipse, from 12 hours before it begins in your city. No Sutak for penumbral lunar eclipses.

Surya Grahan, 2 August 2027: times for Indian cities
The Moon’s full shadow crosses Spain, North Africa, Egypt and Saudi Arabia (see our article on the total eclipse). India sees only the edge of the partial shadow in the late afternoon, with the Sun in the western sky. The farther south and west you are, the more of the Sun is covered: Bengaluru and Chennai see the most, Guwahati almost nothing.
| City | Begins | Maximum | Ends | Sun covered | Sutak begins (traditional) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bengaluru | 3:59 PM | 4:53 PM | 5:43 PM | 38.9% | Mon 2 Aug, 3:59 AM |
| Chennai | 4:03 PM | 4:54 PM | 5:42 PM | 34.3% | Mon 2 Aug, 4:03 AM |
| Mumbai | 3:47 PM | 4:42 PM | 5:31 PM | 31.9% | Mon 2 Aug, 3:47 AM |
| Pune | 3:50 PM | 4:43 PM | 5:32 PM | 31.5% | Mon 2 Aug, 3:50 AM |
| Hyderabad | 3:58 PM | 4:47 PM | 5:33 PM | 26.7% | Mon 2 Aug, 3:58 AM |

| Amritsar | 3:48 PM | 4:22 PM | 4:55 PM | 6.7% | Mon 2 Aug, 3:48 AM |

| Guwahati | 4:26 PM | 4:39 PM | 4:52 PM | 0.5% | Mon 2 Aug, 4:26 AM |
Times in IST, rounded to the minute. “Sun covered” is the share of the Sun’s disc hidden at maximum. Sutak is shown by the traditional rule (12 hours before the eclipse begins in that city); communities differ, so follow your temple or family priest.
Watching the Surya Grahan safely
Even when only a small part of the Sun is covered, its light can damage your eyes. Use eclipse glasses or a solar viewer that meets the ISO 12312-2 standard, or watch the Sun’s image projected through a pinhole. Ordinary sunglasses and homemade filters are not safe, and binoculars or telescopes need a proper solar filter on the front (NASA).
Chandra Grahan 2027: three penumbral eclipses
In a penumbral lunar eclipse the Moon passes only through the Earth’s faint outer shadow, the penumbra, and never reaches the dark inner shadow. The Moon dims slightly but does not look bitten, and most people cannot tell anything is happening. On 21 February the eclipse runs from 2:42 AM to 6:44 AM IST, with the Moon in the western sky before dawn across India. On 18 July the Moon only grazes the edge of the penumbra; NASA lists it, but timeanddate.com does not count it as an eclipse at all. On 17 August the Moon is below India’s horizon. Drik Panchang notes that a penumbral eclipse has no significance in Hinduism and that temples observe no Sutak for it.
Sutak Kaal
By tradition, Sutak begins four prahar (about 12 hours) before a solar eclipse and three prahar (about 9 hours) before a lunar eclipse, and ends when the eclipse ends. It applies only where the eclipse is visible, and children, the elderly and the unwell keep a shorter Sutak of about one prahar (panchangbodh). For 2027 that leaves just the solar eclipse of 2 August; its Sutak start for each city is in the table above.

Questions people ask
How many eclipses are there in 2027?
Five: two solar eclipses (annular on 6 February, total on 2 August) and three penumbral lunar eclipses (20–21 February, 18 July and 17 August). There is no total or partial lunar eclipse in 2027.
Will Surya Grahan 2027 be visible in India?
The total solar eclipse of 2 August 2027 is seen from India only as a partial eclipse in the late afternoon: about 38.9% of the Sun is covered in Bengaluru, 31.9% in Mumbai and 8.1% in Delhi. The annular eclipse of 6 February is not visible from India.
What time is the solar eclipse on 2 August 2027 in Delhi?
From 3:54 PM to 5:03 PM IST, with the maximum at 4:29 PM. Never look at the Sun without certified eclipse glasses.
When does Sutak begin for the 2 August 2027 eclipse?
By the traditional rule, Sutak begins 12 hours before the eclipse starts in your city and ends when it ends. In Delhi that is from Mon 2 Aug, 3:54 AM to Mon 2 Aug, 5:03 PM IST. Follow the guidance of your temple or family priest.
Is the Chandra Grahan of February 2027 visible in India?
It is a penumbral eclipse on the morning of Sun 21 Feb, from 2:42 AM to 6:44 AM IST. The Moon is above the horizon in India, but it only enters Earth’s faint outer shadow, so the dimming is hard to notice by eye.
Is Sutak observed for a penumbral lunar eclipse?
No. Drik Panchang notes that a penumbral eclipse has no significance in Hinduism and temples observe no Sutak for it, and panchangbodh’s Sutak rules say the same.
When is the next lunar eclipse that India can really see?
The partial lunar eclipse on the night of 6–7 July 2028, and then a total lunar eclipse on the evening of 31 December 2028, with totality visible across India.
How we calculated this
Eclipse times from Astronomy Engine for each city’s position and height. Checked against NASA’s eclipse tables (Espenak) for the list of 2027 eclipses and against timeanddate.com, which agrees with our times to within a minute (Kolkata, 2 August: 4:14, 4:43 and 5:12 PM IST; New Delhi, 21 February: 2:42 to 6:43 AM IST). Sutak rules from panchangbodh and Drik Panchang.
