Moonrise today, tithi and fasting nights for your city
Tithi changes with the angle between the Sun and Moon, so moonrise and festival timing differ from city to city. Watch tonight’s Moon rise over your own horizon and find the exact moment to break the fast.

The tithi is the same moment everywhere, but evenings in other countries fall at different points in it. A ✓ marks the evening when chaturthi is in progress at moonrise in that city. Many families abroad keep the fast on India’s date, Thursday 29 October; others follow a local panchang. Follow your family or temple.

How we calculate: moonrise is the moment the top edge of the Moon appears on a flat, clear horizon, with standard atmospheric refraction, computed with Astronomy Engine for each city’s position and height. We checked our Delhi times against the US Naval Observatory for 2026 and 2027 and they match to the minute. Some panchangs print a time a few minutes later, and hills, buildings or haze can delay the first sight of the Moon. Choose your city at the top of the page to watch the moonrise live.
How to use this page
Choose your town with the place button at the top. The sky shows the real Sun and Moon from there, in your own time zone: press play or drag the time bar to watch tonight’s moonrise, or open the date to jump to any festival night. The panel beside the sky gives the tithi now and when it ends, tonight’s moonrise, and the next Purnima, Amavasya, Ekadashi, Sankashti and Karwa Chauth moonrise for the town you chose. The tables below are calculated for Delhi, in India Standard Time (IST).
What is a tithi?
A tithi is a lunar day: the time the Moon takes to move another 12° ahead of the Sun, measured from the centre of the Earth. A lunar month has 30. The fifteen of the waxing half, Shukla Paksha, run from Pratipada to Purnima, which ends at the exact full moon; the fifteen of the waning half, Krishna Paksha, run from Pratipada to Amavasya, which ends at the exact new moon. The Moon’s speed changes along its orbit, so a tithi is not 24 hours long: in our calculations for 2026 to 2028 they last from about 20 to almost 27 hours. A tithi begins and ends at the same instant everywhere on Earth; only the clock time changes with your time zone.
In a panchang the day runs from sunrise to sunrise, so the tithi printed for a date is normally the one in force at sunrise. Fasts that end at moonrise, such as Sankashti Chaturthi and Karwa Chauth, are kept on the day the tithi is in force when the Moon rises, so the fasting day can differ between two cities, even in the same state.
We name each lunar month after the sign (rashi) the Sun enters during it, using the Lahiri ayanamsa. In the amanta system, followed in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, a month runs from one Amavasya to the next; in the purnimanta system of most states north of the Vindhyas, it runs from Purnima to Purnima. A Purnima has the same name in both, but an Amavasya does not: the Amavasya of Diwali is Kartika Amavasya in the purnimanta calendar and Ashwina Amavasya in the amanta one. About every 32½ months a month with no sankranti is added as an Adhika (extra) month.
Purnima dates for the next twelve months

Why do moonrise and tithi times differ between websites?
Moonrise. We give the moment the top edge of the Moon clears a flat horizon, with standard refraction, the same definition the US Naval Observatory uses; our Delhi times for Karwa Chauth 2026 and 2027 match the USNO to the minute. Drik Panchang’s Delhi moonrise times for 2027 are 3 to 5 minutes later than ours. Hills, buildings and haze can delay the first sight of the Moon by several minutes more.
Tithi. Panchangs use different planetary tables, so tithi times can differ by a minute or two. Ours match panchangbodh.com’s New Delhi list to the minute and drikpanchang.com’s to within about two minutes.
Dates. The day rule (sunrise or moonrise) and the month system (amanta or purnimanta) can move a fast or festival by a day, which is why two calendars can both be right.
Moonrise is chandrodaya (चंद्रोदय) in Hindi and Sanskrit, and people also search “chand kab niklega” or “chand nikalne ka samay”. Purnima (पूर्णिमा) is the full-moon tithi and Amavasya (अमावस्या) the new-moon tithi. Sankashti Chaturthi (संकष्टी चतुर्थी) is called Sankatahara Chaturthi in Tamil Nadu, and the Magha one is Sakat Chauth in North India. Karwa Chauth (करवा चौथ) is also spelled Karva Chauth.
Questions people ask
Aaj chand kitne baje niklega? (What time does the Moon rise today?)
In Delhi the Moon rises at 2:19 PM today (IST). Moonrise depends on where you are, so choose your city at the top of the page. The Moon rises about 50 minutes later each day on average, but in Delhi the daily delay ranges from about 28 to 74 minutes through the year.
Purnima kab hai? (When is the next Purnima?)
Ashwina Purnima (Sharad Purnima), from Sun 25 Oct, 11:57 AM to Mon 26 Oct, 9:42 AM IST. The next twelve are in the table above.
Amavasya kab hai? (When is the next Amavasya?)
Kartika Amavasya (Diwali; Ashwina Amavasya in the amanta calendar), from Sun 8 Nov, 11:29 AM to Mon 9 Nov, 12:33 PM IST.
When is the next Sankashti Chaturthi, and when does the Moon rise?
Vakratunda Sankashti (Karwa Chauth), Thursday 29 October 2026; moonrise in Delhi 8:12 PM. In other cities the Moon rises at a different time, so choose yours at the top of the page.
Why do Karwa Chauth moonrise times differ between websites?
Mostly because of the definition of moonrise and the place it is calculated for. Our Delhi time matches the US Naval Observatory to the minute; some panchangs print a time about five minutes later, and a hill or building on your horizon delays the first sight further.
Is there a grahan or sutak today?
No eclipse is visible from Delhi today. The next solar eclipse (surya grahan) seen from Delhi is the partial eclipse of Monday 2 August 2027, 3:54 PM to 5:03 PM IST, with about 8% of the Sun covered. The next lunar eclipse (chandra grahan) seen from Delhi in which the Moon enters Earth’s dark shadow is the partial eclipse of Thursday 6 July 2028, greatest at 11:50 PM IST. Sutak is counted from the eclipse times by the rule of your tradition; the Eclipses page gives exact times for your city.
Is The Moon Tracker a panchang?
No. It gives astronomical calculations: tithi, moonrise and eclipse times. For fasts and festivals, follow your family, your temple or the panchang your community uses.
